  • A very calm night has been followed by a beautiful clear, sunny and calm day.
  • I hope I have found a fix to my website publishing software problem.
  • At 1300 we went ashore; stopping to ge fuel for the outboard. We walked to the ferry and stopped at Easy Street Cafe for a light lunch while we waited for the 1415 car ferry to arrive.
  • We go to greet Ed and Nancy as they arrived for their annual sojourn on Nantucket. This ferry meeting has become a bit of a tradition now.
  • They headed off to get settled in their house. Peggy and I took the bus out to Sconset for a visit to the bluffs. We stocked up with three bottles wine to take to dinner at the Sconset Cafe before going on our walk.
  • We took a walking tour of the Sconret village homes given by Rick, a local photographer and resident. His knowledge of the area was encyclopedic asd we learned many new things about this quaint area of Nantucket.

  • I spent the morning getting Onward ready to start on the trek down the Sounds to Port Washington. Ed and Nancy picked us tip at the Harbormasters pier at 1100 and we headed out to explore. Firs stop was Cisco Brewery which has continued to expand to include a winery, distillery, bars, stores and food truck. We had their version of a Dark & Stormy in which they use an extract of fresh ginger root in stead of ginger beer. I quite enjoyed it as this made for a much less sweet drink.
  • Next we were off to Millie's restaurant by the beach for lunch. The we explored the NW shore of nantucket where Ed and Nancy showed us some of the huge homes out there — yet another world.
  • After a stop at Stop & Shop, we bid farewell to Nancy & Ed and returned to Onward to complete our preparations for the beginning of our trek back to the Chesapeake.
7 September 18; Friday; Nantucket to Fishers Island
  • I had one of those "anticipating a big boat move" nights where I got little and restless sleep. It always seems to come after a period of being in one place for a time. I was up at 0500 and we weighed anchor and got underway in the pre-dawn glimmer. Nantucket was very quiet and we were the only vessel moving. It was a very still night after the cold front passage. The wind began to spool up about 0400 and we had 10-12 kts from the NE as we departed the channel. We motorsailed and managed close to 7 kts against an unfavorable tide. Off Oak Bluffs, he tide changed and we spent a good bit of time doing 8+ kts with the current and wind.
  • We passed Buzzards Bay tower at 1230.
